Teaching
Music theory, maqam and harmony, as well as instrumental coaching for tembûr and guitar. Focus on connecting traditional material with modern arrangements.
Guitar, arrangement, production and sound engineering. Kurdish-based projects, meditative soundscapes and story-driven songs that grow out of real lives and places.
For many years I’ve been active both on stage and in the studio, bringing together music from different regions and traditions.
Merdan Zirav is a Cologne-based musician, guitarist, composer, arranger and producer. Since the early 1990s he has worked on stage, in studios and for television in Kurdistan, Turkey and Germany, and is known for arrangements that blend folk melodies with European-style harmony.
Over the years he has taken part in hundreds of projects – as a guitarist and musical director on stage, and as a recording / mixing engineer in the studio. He has produced albums for artists and bands, as well as live concert recordings. In 2021 he completed the state-level “Landesmusik Musikpädagogik” training programme in music education. In February 2026 he began a two-year retraining as “Mediengestalter Bild & Ton” (image & sound) at BM – Medienberufe in Cologne, which will run until February 2028. In his own studio he has built a hybrid workflow: the warmth of analog, with the flexibility of digital tools.
Recently his focus has shifted more towards Kurdish and multilingual repertoire, long-form storytelling and meditative soundscapes. Through projects like 5Ton.art, nota.merdanzirav.com and the Rotinda Yetkiner Songbook he shares both digital and printed work with listeners and fellow musicians.
A songbook, meditative projects, a digital sheet-music platform and stage works built around narrative – all coming from the same curiosity for both the emotional and the technical side of music.
Music theory, maqam and harmony, as well as instrumental coaching for tembûr and guitar. Focus on connecting traditional material with modern arrangements.
Arrangement, recording, mixing and basic mastering. A production approach that brings acoustic instruments and electronic textures together and can be translated directly to the stage.
A 72-piece meditative cycle tuned to 432 Hz, moving through zodiac signs, modes and colours. At the moment it lives as a web-based player and will later grow into a mobile app.
A digital sheet-music platform for musicians. Arrangements for a multilingual repertoire, supported with PDFs, audio and – where useful – MIDI files for practice and study.
50 songs, 144 pages. A reference work for musicians and archivists that captures guerrilla stories and oral tradition in notation.
In this book, songs interwoven with guerrilla stories are brought together in three layers: full notation, written stories and complete lyrics. For musicians it offers readable, playable arrangements; for researchers and listeners it is a long-term archive.
Design, engraving of the notation and all technical preparation were handled by Merdan Zirav. The structure is meant both for use on stage and for slow reading, page by page, in a quiet room.
Examples of live and studio recordings from songs I have arranged, recorded or produced for different artists. The videos are hosted on the artists’ own YouTube channels – scroll sideways to explore more tracks.
